Western Region (Annapurna Region)

The diverse terrain and the communities with varieties of cultures of the region make this area the most popular trekking area of Nepal. Pokhara “The Lake Town “, one of the trek starting point fascinate every one with its Machhapuchchhre and Annapurna mountains at the very beginning. The trade route of Kali Gandaki in between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri is the deepest gorge in the world. Cultural variety from Hindu communities to Buddhist, Aryans to Mongols, famous Gorkha soldiers, fortresses, villages, valleys, most rainy areas to the rain shadow areas of Nepal – all with extreme contrasts from each other make each day’s walk a different experience. Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna (8091m), Manaslu (8156m), Lamtang Himal (6983m), Machhapuchchhre (6993m),Tukuche peak (6920m), Tilicho Peak (7134m), Nilgiri (6940m) are some of the most the popular mountains of the region.


a) Royal Trek

Trek Grade: 1 Days: 3 - 4

So called because this route was first used by HRH Prince of Wales Charles. This trek has been specially prepared for those who love to enjoy beautiful view and the Himalayan range in a comfortable way. The route passes through Gurung villages on the ridgeline of the Annapurna foothill. Although the trek passes through relatively lower altitude. (Below 2000m), it can provide a wonderful view of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Lamjung Himal, Manaslu, and Himal Chuli. Due to its low altitude this trek can be enjoyed in the winter also. The trek starts from Bijaypur near the army camp and ends at Begnas Lake.

b) President Trek

Trek Grade:2 Days: 4 - 6

This is a four to five days Pokhara trek. The route lies along the heavily forested ridge to the south of the Phewa Tal. Trekking gently at 2000 ft. provides an excellent view of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Manaslu Himalayan range, flora and fauna, green vegetation and endless activities around the villages. In the months of March and April, the blooming rhododendrons, orchids and sighting of many birds makes this trek very enjoyable.

c) Siklis

Trek Grade: 2 Days: 6 – 7

To the north of Pokhara is a unique Gurung village of Siklis. We begin our gentle walk from Pokhara Lake side up towards Siklis (6000 ft), the largest Gurung village in the region. From a ridge-top above the village, fine views of the huge mass of Lamtang Himal are seen. This cultural trek offer ample opportunity to understand the culture of world-renowned Gurkha soldiers and enjoy the Mountain View.

d) Gorepani and Ghandrung

Trek Grade: 2 Days: 6 – 10

This is an excellent short trek on the foothill of the Annapurna. It offers one of the most spectacular views of Annapurna Massif, Dhaulagiri and a close look at Gurung and Magar people, who comprised and contributed to the famous Gorkha army. A side trip to Pun Hill (3193 m.) is the highlight of this area.

e) Annapurna Circuit

Trek Grade:4 Days: 19 – 25

This magnificent trek circumnavigates the huge Annapurna Massifs. The route starts from Besishahar and goes along the Marshyangdi River, with great views of Manaslu and Himal Chuli to the east. At the top of the valley is Thorungla Pass at 5415m which is the highest point of the trek. Descending to the west at Muktinath, we enter the barren Tibetan like valley of the Kali Gandaki. This is the world’s deepest gorge and passes between the giant Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountains.

f)The Annapurna Sanctuary

Trek Grade: 4 Days: 10 – 15

This is a highly praised and spectacular trekking route which leads to the base camp of Annapurna South. The route provides an interesting contrast from lowland to the outstanding high mountains with breathtaking view of the Annapurna range. Though this trek is not a very difficult one, it involves several ascents and descents. The fantastic panoramic view of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Fishtail and other Himalayan ranges is unmatchable and unforgettable.

g) Muktinath – A Holy Trek

Trek Grade: 4 Days: 6 – 17

This trek at the world’s deepest gorge of Kali Gandaki passes between the giants of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. This is an ideal trek throughout the year as the route stays at a low altitude and does not rain in the region. This trek is highly recommended for luxury trekkers as there is a regular flight from Pokhara/Jomsom. A highlight of this trek is leisure day at the holy temple of both Hindus and Buddhists, Muktinath, where a natural holy flame has been burning from time immemorial.
